BACKGROUND:

Over ten years, I helped launch four TAO restaurant locations, creating the central projection mapped dining experience for each. A projected show mapped onto a 20-foot statue of the Buddhist deity Guanyin at the heart of the dining room.

WHAT WE DID:

Designed and animated twenty projection mapped shows, each two minutes long. Each show builds slowly, with quiet surprises emerging across the statue before reaching a spectacle moment and closing in a flourish. Used Mad Mapper to scan the statue at each new location and adjust the media accordingly. Dan Melancon built custom playback software for the installation. Also worked directly with TAO over the years to create new media for new locations and guide other vendors through installation.

IMPACT:

The projection mapped experience has become a defining part of the TAO brand. The immersive, theater-like atmosphere is central to what makes a TAO visit distinctive — and the brand has remained successful across markets for over a decade.

Fun fact it briefly appears in John Wick 2!
